Since 2011, we have led the effort to secure the religious liberties of chaplains and those whom they serve. We enable all chaplains to serve to the broadest extent of their constitutional mission and endorsement, and we nurture and support an environment that cherishes the role of chaplains in American culture.

Our Mission

Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty exists to ensure that chaplains can defend and provide for the freedom of religion and conscience that the Constitution guarantees all chaplains and those whom they serve.

Chaplain Alliance is a critical force multiplier in the battle for religious liberty. Too many chaplains find themselves under fire for simply being true to their faith, but when that happens, they can count on Chaplain Alliance covering their six.
— Michael Berry, General Counsel, First Liberty Institute
For chaplains to have the liberty to speak the whole counsel of God to the troops, they need a strong partner and advocate on the outside. Chaplain Alliance provides just that kind of crucial effective support.
— Gary McCaleb, Senior Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom (Retired)

What We've Achieved

  • Provided language that became the "Right of Conscience" clause, Section 533 of the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act.

  • Supported efforts for the revised Department of Defense Instruction 1300.17 that allowed for greater religious accommodations in the Armed Forces.

  • Voice support for religious freedom at the U.S. Supreme Court by filing "friend-of-the-court" briefs in defense of conscience.

  • Issue press releases resulting in print, radio, internet, and television interviews at the regional and national level, including providing media commentary to the Washington Times, World Magazine, Citizen Magazine, Christian Today, Christian Post, and many others, as well as appearances on Fox News’ Fox and Friends.

  • Testified on behalf of our chaplains before members of the House and Senate Armed Services Committee and the House and Senate Values Action Teams.

  • Supported efforts for the revised Air Force Instruction 1-1 that more clearly reflects conscience protections for service members and chaplains.

  • Distributed over 1,000 copies of the Doing the Right Thing: Military Edition DVD series. Many chaplains are using these as training tools for their command.

  • Print and distribute palm cards that outline God-given and constitutionally protected religious liberties for every service member, including action steps to take if those liberties have been violated, which result in many calls for assistance.
